I requested this because of Xiran Jay Zhao's strong TikTok presence--they're outspoken and hilarious--and I wasn't disappointed. This reads very much like a more romantic Neon Genesis: Evangelion with polyamory and sci-fi and historical elements.

While I wish some of the romantic elements had been fleshed out more (I mean, how often do we get to see positive rep of polyamory in YA lit?), the worldbuilding is strong. I look forward to reading more about the qi and Chrysalis system in any sequels they write.
