In the 4th Dark Tower novel, Stephen King introduces us to a young Roland during the period of time he spends in the land of Mejis. This book offers plenty of adventure and a very well plotted political intrigue scenario. Its major flaw however comes from interrupting the Dark Tower narrative right at its peak. Going from the Waste Lands to an 800 page backstory really was jarring and basically killed my interest in finishing the series.

I also found the depiction of women and mentally disabled people in the book to be problematic, as well as a very disturbing scene depicting animal violence that was superfluous to the plot.
