A Winter in New York
by Josie Silver
When Chef Iris Raven left her toxic boyfriend and didn’t look back, she crossed the pond and settled in New York City, a place familiar to her late mother. Now on a trip through Little Italy, she notices a gelateria that looks all too familiar, known for their coveted vanilla gelato recipe. Gio Belotti tells her the shop is in danger of closing because the owner had a stroke and cannot remember the recipe. As it turns out, Iris is the only one who can help, but things get complicated as she falls for Gio when keeping up the facade.
TW: death of a parent, mentions of stroke, toxic relationship
This is technically a Christmas story, but I wanted to read it when it truly felt like winter outside. I devoured this so quickly, and part of me wishes I didn’t, because I wanted it to last as long as possible. I just wished I had some gelato to gorge on myself, preferably vanilla.
Iris is a great FMC, and still feels relatable despite being more accomplished in life. Sure, she has some inner battles throughout the story, but you really get an in-depth perspective of her character. She is dedicated and compassionate, wanting to help others and respecting their values. And her relationship with Gio felt very natural as well.
I loved the subplot with Iris’ mother and Gio’s uncle. It was an interesting touch that tied the two families together. And that’s another thing I loved about this book, the sense of family is very strong.
