Ball Don't Lie by Matt de la Peña

3.0

Sticky has spent his life bouncing in and out of foster homes. Because of trauma and abandonment issues, he keeps his feelings locked away. OCD behaviors give him a fleeting sense of control over his life, but the basketball court is the only place he truly comes alive.

Readers who enjoy basketball will love the descriptions--and there are a lot. I know little about basketball and was tempted to skim over some of these scenes. However, the basketball scenes were home to some of the most beautiful and poetic language in the book.

I didn't like Sticky for most of the book, but he did grow on me as the story progressed. Overall, I liked the book, but the narrative jumps around between present and past, which makes it hard to follow at times.

Recommended for basketball fans. There's also lots here that will appeal to reluctant (mature) readers.
