Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade by Diana Gabaldon
2.0
The writing is well executed, as you would expect, but I was disappointed in the ending. I did enjoy the way she built the relationship between Lord John and his brother Hal, and the rest of the family.
The whole plot was rather contrived, as it turned out. Or perhaps it's that the story thread with the mystery wasn't woven tightly enough with the thread with the relationship. The relationship thread climaxed dramatically, but that just emphasized the anticlimactic denouement--and I'm not entirely sure it was intended to be the denouement.
