The Mermaid of Black Conch by Monique Roffey
5.0

Truly an award-winning piece of literature. Set in the Caribbean this book would fit in nicely with all the other great works of fiction studied here in Caribbean schools and make excellent reading to all literature lovers. The cover of the book is a lovely prelude to the myth and folklore found within.

The story begins in 1976 and continues years later in the characters' reflections. A beautiful woman Aycayia who has been cursed to be a mermaid for many centuries is attacked. A fisherman, David hides her in his home. Friendship and romance develop between the two but will soon come to an end. Secondary characters though interesting themselves helped to bolster Aycayia’s story. This story was fantastical and sad with a poetic, sometimes strange dialogue. Race is a theme in the novel hinting at the colonial powers in the Caribbean’s history. Although the central character is based on myth there are many realistic themes to take note of in this novel. This book is insightful and beautiful, and I recommend it to all readers.
