Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
Did not finish book.
DNF’d at the end of the first book. I just could not.
The book wasn’t bad writing wise, and it read very well, but. My problem mainly comes from the complete and utter lack of joy this book has. It was literally sucking the life out of me.
Like, Pip was so mistreated and had basically NO good interactions, except for Joe, (and Biddy, who I’m not counting because she’s introduced later in his life) who is a good man, but cannot give Pip what he needs (i.e. actual parenting or protection from Pip’s abusive sister/Joe’s wife)
I read the chapter summaries, and it’s not bad, the story line is good and it is very well crafted. I just can’t read it.
This is the same problem I have with Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins. It’s good, it makes sense, and it was what it needed to be, I just do not find it entertaining to read.
Not saying I need complete happiness in my books, there can be tragedy, but it cannot JUST be tragedy. No matter how good the story, how rich the characters, or how compelling the message, if I feel like I’m wallowing in a swamp the whole time I won’t read it.
Granted, it is a very well written swamp, but a swamp nonetheless. If you like that more power to you, but personally, I like to be clean and dry.
