The Forever War by Joe Haldeman
3.0
medium-paced

[Notes copied from texts to a friend, rant-y]

i was told this book was fucking monumental
fucking stephen king likes this guy
and it was just severely mid

i was told it was strictly critical of war but it was really fucking bad at it
it is very hard to convince me that you think war is bad if you also spend a substantial percent of your book describing the tools used to fight war
fun fact it actually doesn't matter how the bomb blows up.
if it goes boom then it is pretty destructive and fucked up
also, this novel was supposed to be in relation to vietnam (discussing how soldiers had a hard time adjusting back to civilian life and whatnot?) but the warfighting almost all took place in uninhabited voids
that's not what vietnam was like and that makes the entire comparison feel superficial and slightly dishonest
if the only tragedy that you can imagine in war is what happens to those who fight it i think you have a severely limited sense of empathy
soldiers are subjected to a *lot* of awful things, but so are the people caught in the crossfire, and this novel constructed itself so as to erase these people
