The Collarbound by Rebecca Zahabi

4.0

This epic fantasy installment is full of unique magic, interesting characters, and mystery. There are a few familiar and beloved tropes such as the hint of a 'chosen one' situation. I loved the theme motif of birds/ wind/ flight and the whole belief system surrounding that. There is also a societal structure with different people which lends itself to the discussion of discrimination and prejudice.

Bullet review:
- Fascinating world
- Mind magic
- Rich lore and history
- Full of potential
- School setting
- Mentor figure
- Dual POVs

Altogether a fresh and imaginative fantasy that I want more of! I have a lot of good things to say about this book, but I will say that it felt incomplete in the sense that it was mostly buildup. While some questions are answered, most of it was about laying the foundations for a bigger story. I generally got the feeling that it was part one of a larger book. Which is why I am really looking forward to the sequel! So maybe wait until it's out to read both books back-to-back as I feel it would be more satisfying.
