The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan

“Life is only precious because it ends,”
— Mars

I really enjoyed reading this, and I liked it more than the Lost Hero. I still like Camp Half-Blood more than Camp Jupiter after this, since they haven’t stayed there much. I’m glad that Percy finally recovered his memory in the end, and I want to know what will happen next with Annabeth. I also liked the area they traveled through in this book, as well as all of the new characters. The metaphors were also funny as well as visually descriptive. My favorite part was when they escape the Amazons on Arion, as well as when they went to Portland and found Ella. My favorite characters in book two are Ella, Hylla, Percy and Hazel. Altogether, I thought this was a great second book to the series.

Summary: Percy Jackson is in San Francisco when he can’t remember anything from his past, other than the name Annabeth. He is being chased by gorgons, and goes through a tunnel carrying a goddess named June, who says he needs to carry her. They make it through the tunnel with the help of some people named Hazel and Frank, and end up in a Roman camp.
June turns out to be Juno, who tells the Roman campers to watch over Percy. She disappears before Percy and Hazel go to meet Octavian. Octavian says that Percy can join one of the legions, and Hazel later tells Percy that she doesn’t want Octavian to be elected as praetor. She knows that Octavian has the knowledge of her curse, which is that riches from under the earth appear next to her, and they are dangerous.
Hazel takes Percy to meet her brother, Nico, and Percy has a feeling he knows Nico. Then at the gathering they have, Hazel says she will be in charge of Percy, and that he’ll stay in the Fifth Cohort, which is supposedly the worst in Camp Jupiter. They are the worst Cohort in camp because they lost their pole that has a golden eagle on top, which is said to bring strength to them. Frank, the camper that helped Percy when he first got there, also has a secret. There is a small piece of wood that burns easily, and the more it burns the more Frank can feel his life slip away.
Frank has a flashback to when his mother died and his grandmother first gave him the piece of wood and sent him away. Then Camp Jupiter has war games where the first person to climb over the wall is given an award. With Percy’s help, Frank and Hazel manage to do this before anyone else, and suddenly Mars—or Ares—shows up. He tells the campers that Frank is his son and should go on a quest to Alaska to free Thanatos, a.k.a. Death, since monsters and people are coming back from the dead and they need it to stop.
Percy has a dream of Grover, Tyson, and Annabeth looking for him, and Annabeth tells Percy to stay put while they find him. Later, Percy goes with Hazel and Frank to a Senate meeting to discuss the quest, and they make a plan to go to Alaska. They also need to finish the quest by the Feast of Fortuna, which is in four days, and Percy knows he can’t stay out at camp and that he needs to help with the quest.
Reyna, a praetor of the camp, asks Percy if he’d like to be the other praetor when he returns, but he declines. Reyna also asks him to find her sister, Hylla, and check on her since she and Reyna haven’t been in touch. When they start the quest by boat, Hazel has a flashback of her own time in Alaska after her mother was taking over by Gaea and by greed, and made Hazel have the curse of the riches.
She remembers how she resisted Gaea and prevented her son Alcyoneus from rising. Then, when Hazel wakes up, some Grain Spirits takes her away, and she stops them with her ability to bring riches from the ground.
Percy and Frank come to help her fight them, and they hide behind a rock as an army of monsters including centaurs, Cyclopes, and the giant named Polybotes. They pass by, slowly getting closer to Camp Jupiter which is still pretty far away at that point. When the monsters walk away, Percy, Hazel, and Frank enter a nearby store, and find that Iris, the rainbow goes, is the one who runs the store.
She tells Frank that there is a person named Phineaus in Portland, Oregon who will be able to tell them where Thatanos is. Frank understands this and goes out of the shop to kill the basilisks that the giant put there. He defeats them using his spear from Mars which has three charges to summon a killing-machine skeleton.
When they board the boat again and later arrive at Portland, Oregon, they find Phineas near some food carts. Phineas, who is blind, agrees to give them the information to where Thatanos is located. He wants them to trap the harpies that always surround him, but the demigods know that the harpy Phineas wants is valuable.
So they make him play a game of chance instead by making him choose which of the gorgon blood vials to drink. He chooses the wrong one and dies, so Percy and the others take the harpy, Ella, and travel to Alaska. When they stop at Seattle right before their boat breaks, Hazel and Frank go unconscious together and Hazel reveals what happened to her in the Underworld before Death was trapped. Frank bestows his piece of wood to Hazel to keep safe so that Frank can be safe too.
When they wake up, they find Reyna’s sister, Hylla, who is currently the queen of the Amazons, a group of female warriors. Hazel talks with the Amazon queen, who tells Hazel that her power is about to be challenged by an ancient queen who came back from the Underworld.
The queen, Hylla, also realizes that Hazel must be the one from their prophecy since she can get up close with the horse named Arion that the Amazons captured. Since some of the Amazons follow the old queen and some follow Hylla who is good, Percy and Frank are put into jail and Hazel has to use her power to take out the guards who support the old queen.
They manage to escape on Arion, who is a supersonic fast horse that takes them to the house of Frank’s grandmother before leaving. At the house, Frank uses his second charge out of the spear on some of the many monsters camping beside the house, and they go inside afterward. In his grandmother’s room, Frank finds Mars there who tells Frank he has an important role to play in the war.
When Mars leaves, Frank talks to his Grandmother for the last time, who tells him that he, along with his ancestors, has the power to change into other living forms. She also tells him that their way to get to Alaska is on their private plane which is a little away from the house. Frank then finds Hazel, Percy, and Ella the harpy on the roof trying to ward off the Laistrygonians.
Percy tells Ella to wait in the woods for some of his friends to later come and find her, so she does. Then they all go to the garage and drive the car past the ogres after Percy blasts them with the sprinkler. They race to the airplane and get on just in time, then they leave for Alaska. When they get to Anchorage, they head to the glacier they need to go to, and encounter some angry gryphons on the way there.
They manage to outsmart the gryphons by hiding under a frost giant, who breathe icy breath on the gryphons and freezes them. As they continue to travel toward the glacier, Percy falls into mud and Hazel and Frank have to save him. While Hazel is in the mud saving Percy, Gaea tells her that Nico is trapped somewhere.
When she saves Percy, Arion comes and takes them the rest of the way to the glacier, where Alcyoneus has Thanatos trapped. Hazel and Arion take on Alcyoneus while Percy battles the army of shades and Frank breaks the chains of Thanatos with the piece of wood that preserves his life. When Frank finishes his task, Percy falls off the glacier along with many of the army, and Frank races to help Hazel fight Alcyoneus. Frank finally uses his power to turn into a grizzly bear and they knock out the giant and drag him out of his homeland—which is the only way to kill him.
Hazel finishes off the giant once and for all, and they race back to Percy after Thanatos goes back to Camp Jupiter. Percy ends up being find after the army fell into the water, and he managed to grab the golden eagle symbol of the Twelfth Legion that one of the enemy had. Arion races all of them on chariot back to Camp Jupiter before the Feast of Fortuna. Once they get there, Percy recovers the rest of his memory from drinking the healing gorgon’s blood, and they meet up with Tyson and Mrs. O’Leary. Then they all leap into battle, and Percy defeats Polybites with the help of the statue god Terminus, who enforces the rules at the camp.
The Amazons come to help fight, and once the big army is defeated, they star the Feast of Fortuna and raise Percy to be their other praetor. They hold a senate meeting, and Percy promises that Camp Half-Blood is coming in a ship to help the Romans fulfill the rest of the Great Prophecy.
