Sugar Land by Tammy Lynne Stoner
3.0

Sugar Land follows the life of Dara, a girl who falls in love with another girl in the 1920s. Dara runs away from having to confront what this means for her and her life, and begins working in a prison kitchen, where life is no less tough. All of this comprises the first half of the book, which I loved. There's a turning point, however, after which the writing becomes overly folksy and dials up the southern-isms to 11. It goes from a poignant story about identity in a culture that tells you you're an aberration to white trash chick lit, and I just honestly do not know what to make of it. 2.5 stars.
