Playground by Aron Beauregard

4.0

I am giving this 4 stars despite how much I HATED this book.
DO NOT READ IT!!!! I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT AT ALL!!!

However, it is a near flawless execution of what it was trying to do.
Aron Beauregard is cruel! How dare he make me care about these children and then do THAT to them!

The themes of cycles of abuse, trauma, and family are prevalent in this story. If there was not a genuine plot at the heart of this story I would have no problem calling it vile and giving it one star
That's not to say those themes aren't buried under a long list of trigger warnings that comes with putting children in traps that belong in a saw movie.

Taking a star off for the completely unnecessary sexual component (not towards the children in the playground). It was disgusting, low hanging fruit to make the reader feel uncomfortable. Also the eating of fecal matter that made me want to vomit. WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY WAS THAT INCLUDED!
