Pae is an Ordinary - which means she is completely powerless in a kingdom where her kind is hunted killed for being "diseased". Kai is the future Enforcer - his job is to hunt Ordinaries. And what do you know? They have the hots for each other.

Pae ends up in this Trial against other powerful, rich, royal-adjacent folks, where she has to make it through or lose her life. All the while, she is faking an ability she does not posses, while slowly falling in love with Prince Kai.

The tensionnnnnnnn.... the banter..... I mean some of the romance in it was a little cheesy, but I devoured this book. Kai is male lead goals. I'm definitely excited for book 2!

I will say that what I was missing was the world building - this is mostly romantacy. The world of Elites vs Mundanes was a little hazy to me. Is this based on money, royal status, or magical ability? If the last, what ability categorizes you where? I would've loved to see more of the side characters. Pae's best friend, or the other contestants in the Trial were barely mentioned. The only people you really get to know are Kai and Pae. Let's hope this changes in the rest of the trilogy.
