A quicker read than I thought, I found the book to be… good. It’s a landmark piece in European vampire literature, and an enjoyable read. The end was a lot of “telling not showing” which bored me and lowered my overall perception. This is something I’ve noticed a lot with older literature

The scenes between Carmilla and Laura are the best - they’re otherworldly and beautiful. And most of the book is this.

What elevates it is Machado’s editing. It’s sparse, but adds just the right amount of depth to the original text. The illustrations in this edition are also beautiful
