I would always pick up a book from the Famous Five series when we went to our weekly library visit when I was a kid. I just adored the series as a child.
For this year I’ve decided to do a re-read of some of my old favorites, starting with the first book of that series.
I was surprised that I didn’t remember the plot of this book at all because I do remember this book cover especially and some of the illustrations I also remember tracing as a child lol.
The story itself is nicely written but straightforward, I can still see how child-me was absolutely in love with these books (I really wanted an adventuring group of my own back than but the only one who I roped into exploring things was my brother, who dutifully followed me through woods and abandoned places). This book is very much a testament to its time though, when it comes to the depiction of gender roles and ideals
