valerie87 's review for:
The Sunday Philosophy Club
by Alexander McCall Smith
“Isabel observed an etiquette of the telephone: a call before eight in the morning was an emergency; between eight and nine it was an intrusion; thereafter calls could be made until ten in the evening, although anything after nine-thirty required an apology for the disturbance. After ten one was into emergency time again.”
Isabel lives in Edinburgh and is the Editor of the Review of Applied Ethics. In this story, we get to know her in addition to her niece, Cat, her housekeeper, Grace, and her friend, Jamie.
While Isabel is at the theater, a body falls down from the balcony above her. She is determined to find out what happened. Although it is concluded by the police that it was an accidental fall, Isobel believes it was something more than that.
I enjoyed reading about the relationships between Isobel and the other characters. McCall Smith has created an entertaining start of a series. I’m sure I’ll be reading the next one soon.
This was a nice break from the usual psychological thrillers and mysteries I typically read. This may be my go-to series whenever I need something light.
