I think this book was the first time contemporary general fiction really clicked for me. A cliche of a depressed artist wants to die but with the least amount of negative impact, leading him to study the concept of martyrdom. Through this tale the author examines grief, addiction, identity and the American Dream. Narrative is interspersed with folk tales and surreal dream sequences.
