Persuasion by Jane Austen
5.0
There is no more beautiful declaration of love than Wentworth's love letter. For this reason alone, Persuasion is worth the read.
Update 7/1/24: I reread Persuasion after visiting England last month. I got to be in Bath on two days, visiting many of the sites mentioned in the book, and re-reading with the place in my mind's eye from the text, paying attention to her craft and catching different subtleties of the writing of character--Anne stands out to me more clearly as a heroine than ever before. We tend to focus on the fact that all of Austen's books involve The Marriage Plot, but by doing so, we may forget to pay attention to the protagonists, who are all so different and are written in different styles. JA, still and ever my idol.
