Requiem for a Dream
by Hubert Selby Jr.
5/5
When the American dream becomes a nightmare. The book is just as bleak as the movie, but the book spends a lot more time showing the slow descent into desperation. The words burn off the page. There's no closure, no reconciliation, not even acceptance. Each character speaks differently and you have to get used to their way of speaking as Selby Jr. doesn't use punctuation marks or end sentences with “Harry replied” or “Marian said.” Addiction is the villain here, and just like in the movie it’s Sarah Goldfarb’s addiction to TV, pharmaceuticals, and the past that is most horrifying.
