Jackal is not shy about black origins, history, and rage. The complexity and nuances of what it’s like for black children desiring to understand their identity in a world intent on erasing them is explored with intention and care.

Erin E. Adams has managed to craft one of the most compelling psychological thrillers I’ve read in years with tasteful twist and some turns that genuinely keep you hungry for the next page. Race and class are two major components of the novel that work in tandem with a tale that is unfortunately a reflection of the reality of what it’s like to be in a black female body. Liz internal dialogue along with the detailed relational dynamics shared with other characters was raw and beautifully executed. The sex scene seemed almost unnecessary however it was not dragged out and and added more context to our MC’s internal struggles.

When black children go missing, when black bodies are continually discarded with no regard, when erasure seeks to omit a people that have always been, rage can be a beautiful driving force for revenge and perhaps even renewal.
