And They Were Roommates by Page Powars

Ooooookay, I can already tell this one isn't for me. Being an audhd reader, I need things to largely make a certain logical sense.

The story is, at its heart, a romance. And boy howdy have I never met a more mismatched pair. Jasper is a narcissistic prick and I honestly don't know what Charlie sees in him. Seriously. All we're told is that they met at summer camp, kissed by a lake, and Jasper broke his heart irredeemably...two years ago. At 14. Further, why was Jasper (who is now 16) voted Sexiest Poet? And he's so hotshot of a poet that he has his own book, a cardboard cutout, and multiple posters that he's plastered all over their dorm room? Hmmmmm. Sus.

I liked the trans rep and Charlie's struggles. As someone who has supported others who questioned if they were going to get punished for going to the "wrong" bathroom, this visibility is much needed in literature today. That said...I highly question the viability of Charlie already having had top surgery in that two years when his family is poor, him deciding to go to a questionably anti-trans school just because his Mom did, and having a best friend that attends a school that doesn't allow cell phones. How do they stay in touch? How did they even develop a solid friendship when they can't communicate that often?

A shame because I was really, really looking forward to this.
