This book left me feeling emotionally drained and heartbroken. It wasn’t the ending of the book that gutted me, but little James and everything he endured. I just felt so sad for him, what he went through - feeling like no one cared about him/he was forgotten, but it didn’t break his spirit or change who he was.
The story was gripping, heavy, and dark. What I found most interesting was the relationship between the MC and his father. Seeing both perspectives gave the reader insight into their relationship and I was satisfied that it seemed repaired at the end.
Solid 4 out of 5.
