Looking for Alaska by John Green

5.0

"I don't know where there is, but I know it's somewhere, and I hope it's beautiful"

Okay first things first: Why didn't anyone warn me how incredibly sad this was? Sure it's all wonderful and laughs and lovable and then BAM suddenly I find myself in tears and trying to sound like I'm not crying when my Dad calls me to see if I was awake yet because they left early this morning!

John Green is a genius, this I already knew from reading Paper Towns, watching his vids and the general ASDFGHJKL;' JOHN GREEN chatter my friends have. This book was brilliant!

I really enjoyed the characters, especially Miles aka Pudge. They were so flawed it was wonderful. It's one of the things I love about John Green's writing, his characters FEEL so real. They have flaws and imperfections that are very easy to relate to.

This story was brilliant in the sense that this boy heads of to boarding school with no friends and hoping to find the Great Perhaps, he's a smart kid if not a bit geeky but lovable at the same time. His roommate, known to everyone as the Colonel, is kind of your typical rebellious teenager that completely changes Miles' life.

There are a few people that change Miles during the story but none more than the gorgeous Alaska, described as "the hottest girl in all of human history" who is the most flawed character, in my opinion, in the book. She completely changes Miles and ultimately I think it's for the better.

I spent a good lot of this book laughing and just enjoying the things they group get up to and then everything changed toward the end. I really didn't see it coming so when IT happened I was shocked a fair bit.

SPOILER FROM THIS POINT ON.

Okay.

Is this enough space to avoid reading the spoiler?

Is it?

Don't read if you don't want a spoiler!

Okay.

Obviously the part I'm talking about is Alaska's death. It completely shocked me! It was a brilliant twist of course but so devastating that it hurt. I get attached to characters very quickly and Alaska was one of those characters I immediately adored so saying goodbye was painful.

Honestly a brilliant read and I'm so glad I read it, finally!

This review is kind of all over the place (but aren't they all) but it was just a glorious read!
