Honestly this book has a lot of flaws. The fairytale retelling aspect is very loosely based which was ok, I wish there was a little more incorporated though. I didn't really care for the story overall, but there was an aspect that I liked and that's why it's 4 stars. I will explain below and there won't be spoilers, I'll mark the one spoiler at the end that I need to rant about.

The way the main characters meet is kinda stupid and silly. I wish the book maybe kept that same silliness or just something more than a flat tone. Gemma and Elliot are just flat out mean to each other. For some reason that's meant to be the flirtation and banter. They literally just hate each other. We never really see any emotions or feelings blossom between them. We're told about some nice things that Elliot does, but we don't really see him do anything for Gemma until close to the end. Gemma never shows that she cares about Elliot at all, she just wants to use him to gain her freedom. Somehow, they fell in love at some point. While there is some character growth individually, we don't really see them grow together.

Here's the aspect that I liked, this book helped me to heal from a lot of abuse and trauma from my past. Gemma having to deal with being shamed because of her past scandal and putting on a fake persona to deal with it felt very close to home for me. Then when she finally opens up about it to Elliot and is waiting for him to ridicule and blame her for it. Instead, he becomes defensive and protective of her because it wasn't her fault and everyone else is just cruel. It just really helped me through my own cruel thoughts and to heal parts of myself from my past. This also helped with the buildup to the spice that happens later on. I used to be triggered by it, but this time I felt more comfortable. This is why I've rated the book 4 stars.

Overall, this book was ok even though it has some flaws within the way the characters interact. I also want to read the prequel trilogy to learn more about Elliot's past story and I probably will read some of the other books within this series.

SPOILER RANT: Ok, so Elliot isn't actually his real name. The curse that has been placed on him causes him and everyone in the kingdom to forget his name. So, Gemma comes up with the name "Elliot" to call him throughout the story. Once the curse is broken, we learn his real name and the name is Flauvis..... What the heck is this name?! I was expecting something way grander, but nope, we get something that sounds so silly and ridiculous. I will stick with Elliot.
