Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi (Novel) Vol. 5 by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu

Well, I was wrong. The series was really only running on being fun to read. The pacing (especially the amount of flashbacks) was distracting, scenes could be repetitive, and it was dragging on a bit too long. The fact that it was definitely enjoyable is a testament to the actually interesting and and important plot and mystery. The romance is a good enough slow burn, the characters’ other relationships feel meaningful, and they and the writing are funny (“…” said everyone). It’s even gay and has beautiful art. I just feel disappointed that again, the main romantic relationship is held as the only real thing in the series. I know that the focus is and was always going to be on the romance, but I will never see that as enough to forget other aspects set up to be meaningful. It ends ok, but then what? I didn’t start reading the series for rape play, so I can’t take that in exchange for any suggestion that things in the world meaningfully changed besides a couple getting together. It can’t be enough for me.
