French Milk
by Lucy Knisley
This was a cute book but I would like it a lot more if I knew Lucy. Because why do you care about someone's trip if you don't know them? Nothing ground-breaking happened. No one got sent to Turkish prison because someone planted hash in their bags when they tried to cross the border. No one had a big realization. No one killed a man at the Louvre just to watch him die.
It's a fun document of a girl's trip to France with her mama and lists out the places they went, the art they saw and the food they ate. The comics are simple and good and it's kind of nice to see into someone's trip & diary of it.
But a few little parts of it made me cringe just a wee bit. I'm not much older than Lucy was when she wrote this (she was 22 and I'm 26) and I can't help but compare her trip diary to mine from the past. Where you clearly think what you've got to say is important and or clever and or risque but then you read it like a year or two later after more life experience and you're like, "Uhhhhh, that was not important. And I kinda look silly for thinking it was." And I think what made me cringe is not just relating to that but that I am only 26 so I have, like, a million years ahead of me to look back on shit I wrote today and think I'm lame.
But that's all about me me me so maybe that's unfair.
