There was a poem by Clint Smith that was floating around the internet in mid-2020 as marches for racial injustice spread across the nation. That poem When People Say "We have Made it Through Worse Before was my introduction to the beauty and and breath of Clint Smith's writing.
This poem, and many others like it are included in this collection of poetry that came out in 2023. While the pieces that are reflective of current events are poignant and insightful I really appreciated the poetry that were smaller in scope i.e. poems about fatherhood, about love, about dancing at the grocery store that filled my cup so to speak.
If you haven't tried poetry before this is a great collection to start with. If you want a collection of poetry that has a clear eyed look at the world in all it's uncertainty, this is also the book for you.
