This book is written from Belly’s, the FMC, point of view. However the book’s voice sounds like an adult writing how they think a 15 yr old talks and not succeeding. Belly reads as way more whiney and childish than a true-to-life 15 yr old. It is telling that flashbacks to Belly at 10/11/12 read exactly the same as the 15/16 present day chapters.
**SPOILERS**
The supposed crush on and relationship with Conrad is based on…nothing. There is zero on-the-page basis for any sort of anything between the two. He is exclusively mean to her, tells her to leave him alone, and even the supposed romantic climax of the book has Conrad fully uninterested and disengaged.
That said, this was an interesting exercise in seeing how an author can take and improve upon her own work both by having the benefit of more writing experience and by translating the work to a different medium. The show is *definitely* stronger than the book.
