The Unlikely Heir by Jax Calder

This book was such a pleasant surprise! I reached for it because I love both royal intrigue and politics and fully expected it to be a strictly lighthearted sort of thing. And yes, it was exactly that in many ways, fun and indulgent and tropey, but it was also much more intense than expected, especially at certain moments, and I loved it for that. There's plenty of comparison made with Red, White and Royal Blue, including in the reviews on here, but I definitely enjoyed this one much more than I did RWRB - the stakes definitely felt higher, the characters - more fleshed both in regards to and outside of their positions and there was this tension that I love in a book; the constant feeling that there's something happening behind the scenes that you can't quite grasp but that makes you uneasy because you don't know when the other shoe is going to drop, and when it finally does, the rug gets pulled from under your feet in such quick succession that it makes the reading experience much more exciting.

I had high hopes for the ending and they were, thankfully, fulfilled in a way that felt both realistic (given the circumstances) and satisfying for both characters. The second book is already on my TBR and the third one already sounds incredibly interesting as well. I've definitely found a new author to keep an eye on.
