The Player Next Door
by K.A. Tucker
2.5 stars.
I had never read a second chance romance before and saw this on a booktok recommendation video.
I do think this trope could be one I’d enjoy, but unfortunately I didn’t love this exploration of it.
For me the main character came across as quite whiny and immature, and I just found her reactions to the love interest not very believable. I couldn’t buy into what she was saying about their past at all.
As well as that, the overall first half of the book was quite slow and predictable. It did get a lot better in the second half however, and I actually enjoyed the third act breakup - something that usually frustrates me.
Another bugbear for me though was the writing style in places. Some of the dialogue was a little cringe, and her inner monologue was downright cheesy.
It wasn’t terrible but I wouldn’t reread or recommend it unless someone was seriously into the second chance romance trope.
