He/She/They: How We Talk About Gender and Why It Matters
by Schuyler Bailar
This book is fantastic! This is actually my second time reading the book, as we selected it for book club after I'd read it previously. I listened to the audiobook on my first read, which was very well done. And I read the paperback this time around for a slightly different experience.
In He/She/They, Bailar gives us both a highly personal look into his life as a trans collegiate athlete as well as a detailed introduction to how to be a good ally to the trans community. He blends memoir with trans history and education to cover a variety of topics relevant to the trans experience. As a cishet woman, this book gave me better insight into the experience of trans people, provided me with tools to be a better ally, and will help me speak more intelligently against anti-trans legislation. If I ever have an opportunity to hear him speak in person, I would definitely take it!
