A lot more world building than the Miyazaki film. Less internal/character driven and more of a Pippi Longstocking style adventure story about coming of age and fantasy adventures. Infused with a delightfully Japanese slice-of-life approach. Reminds me a lot of Howl’s Moving Castle, so I can see why Miyazaki was later drawn in by Diana Wynne Jones’ classic fantasy.
