What the River Knows
by Isabel Ibañez
This is one of those books that has a genre list a mile long. This YA Historical fantasy adventure romance is quite a mouthful, but it was fun! I was drawn to this book despite the YA designation because of the adventure. Anything with even the remotest of Indiana Jones vibes has my attention. Add in a dash of fantasy, a smattering of romance, and a spoonful of history, and you've got the makings of an enjoyable read.
What I had to remind myself throughout reading, though, was that this book is definitely YA. It lacks some of the complexity of character and themes expected in an adult book of the same variety.
I wanted a little more danger in the adventure, a little more depth in the magic, a little more substance in the romance, a little more twisty in the twists.
All that being said, and looking at the book through the YA lens, I did really enjoy the book. I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened. It was fun and totally satisfied my adventure itch. Inez was a feisty lead, and Whit was a perfect complimentary character to her. I am looking forward to reading the sequel and seeing the final developments of these characters and their adventure.
