Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Therapist, Her Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed by Lori Gottlieb

emotional informative inspiring reflective sad slow-paced

5.0

A powerful and emotive book that pulls back the curtain on mental health, therapy, personal demons, and suffering. Lori Gottlieb, a therapist, wrote this memoir after going through an unexpected breakup and starting therapy to help her through it. Over the course of the book, we see her own personal therapy sessions as well as some of her patients.

I became invested in each of Lori’s patients, as well as her own personal journey. (Of course some details have been changed for privacy). Their stories are relatable and heart-breaking. From the sixty-nine year old contemplating suicide unless her life improves, to the young newly wed who is dying from terminal cancer, and even the tv executive who calls everyone an idiot. I cheered them on when they made realisations, and I cried with them when they were suffering.

This book sheds light on therapy, and we do get insights into techniques and history behind it. But what makes this book stand out is it’s honesty. We see people at their most vulnerable, their worst pain, their thoughts, their happiness. We see their humanity. Beautiful and poignant, this book will stay with me for a long time.
