Everyone says this book is slow, and I can’t exactly refute that except to say that the plot moves forward with such propulsive energy that I frequently stayed up late to read another chapter. Once you sink into it, the complexity of the language isn’t a barrier, and gives space for some truly beautiful passages and a gorgeous illustration of the characters. You know them all so well by the end of the book that closing it feels just as bittersweet as saying goodbye to childhood friends!
