The explicit content (rape, animal abuse) feels pointless. Even when the narrative starts of the Dutch women being sold and raped to the colonisers, Dewi Ayu's nonchalant attitude feels undermining to the trauma of the women. The fact that this is written by a man only makes it worse. I'd just rather read a book by an Indonesian woman.
