The Icebound Land by John Flanagan
5.0
A darker addition to the RA world that really shows depth and the growing of characters. Not as many funny or light moments as the other books but the weightiness enriches the whole series. Evanlyn has a marvelous character arc and seeing her grow was very satisfying.
Violence/Substance Abuse
Yes, addiction is a big theme in this book. Parents of course should ultimately decide what is best for their kids, but I wouldn't shy away from this book just because of that as it shows the very dark consequences of addictive substances (whether drugs, alcohol or pornography). There is also an evil overlord that is a merciless killer. With those in mind, I would recommend the age group as teens and up.
Language
There are about 20 instances of mild profanity (damn and hell). <--To be fair, John Flanagan is Australian and they have a different idea of what constitutes swearing
