Know My Name by Chanel Miller

challenging emotional sad medium-paced

5.0

If you have ever thought or uttered the phrases, “Why did they never say anything?” or “Why would they wait so long to say something? Why now?” then you need to sit down and read this book.

Look. This was absolutely heartbreaking to read, yet validating all at once. It is an absolute must-read for all, men and women alike. Read it even if you already consider yourself an advocate for assault victims and especially if you don’t.

The author walks through not only the horrific event that occurred, but also the joke of the system procedures to gain “justice” and the emotional upheaval it all had on her, her family, and those who were present that night. She speaks plainly on the problems within our culture that made it so easy for people to be victimized by assault and again by the critique of who they are as a person and their value if they try to seek legal justice. There’s no question why most just live silently in their pain.

This was an extremely powerful and well-written memoir I will recommend over and over to people in my life.
