Atonement by Ian McEwan

4.0

I recently read Mrs Dalloway and was struck by how like her Emily seemed. I loved the rejection letter and the suggestion that even the most sophisticated readers like a bit of plot action. And I enjoyed the playful acknowledgement of the almost prurient way the reader looks for the private author in the text. In the end I gave up looking, much too tricky, squarely outplayed here by layers of interpretation and misinterpretation that fully absorbed my attention.
