Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson

so beautiful and delicate :( this book is an ode to friendships. a « we were girls together » book in the very purest sense of the words (we all know how i feel about THAT phrase !!!!! yes it brings tears to my eyes). there’s a terrible hopelessness in girlhood as it comes at us, snarling and inescapable. we belong to the world before we belong to ourselves. still, the tender thumping of friendships gives girlhood back its shape, yields it into softness once more, bathes it in sheets of light, lulling it back into our hands, one whisper at a time. jacqueline woodson writes about it in such a heartbreakingly accurate way :((((( !!!!! the book also encompasses realities so different from mine and i feel grateful to have been a witness to them in such an intimate way. i am now a dedicated fan and WILL be reading more of jacqueline woodson’s books
