Such a love letter to classic female gothic writings such as the Bronte sisters and Mary Shelley. I think if you don't like gothic literature, you just straight up won't like this story. I also found myself thinking about the themes and motifs within the book - some were very subtle (colonialism of the body alongside the land), some were less subtle (snake eating itself), but both worked well. Perhaps it because I write as well, but I could tell the themes and ideas were placed with loved within the story.

I also think the story did a fantastic drive for the plot, I think the mixture of characterization and story was exceptionally well balanced. Not too much musing, not too much plot without characters.

I started the book hating the main character. I ended the book loving her.
