Skyward by Brandon Sanderson

This book was such an amazing experience! The world is complex and well thought which is written in such a great way. There was very little info-dumping and it was so immersive. This is exactly what I needed in a sci-fi.

I really liked this society and how Sanderson portrayed nepotism; the ideology of being a coward (and how this is linked to mental illness). This reminded me of the Spartans and their views of war. And I liked how M-Bot was used as a comparison to the humans, how he blindly followed orders, raising the question about free will and having the ability to think and make your own judgments. The realities of war strengthened what a 'coward' is, which made Spensa question her views on it, which isn't so black and white after all.

"The only reason we have this stupid culture of self-martyrdom is because somebody feels they have to justify our casualties. To make them seem honourable, righteous." -Cobb

I thought that the characters were very relatable, Rig's difficulty in choosing a career path was portrayed so well, it was so realistic, and I think that novels sometimes and often skim over these thoughts of indecision over careers. I also like how class was portrayed and that Jorgen's high class and ability to 'cheat' his way into flight school wasn't as simple, that his life was planned out for him, and I think that a lot of people can relate to the characters who aren't sure of their future, or have doubts beginning said future, or even the pressures of parents and other figures in their lives.

Overall, I thought that this book was extremely relatable and realistic, the world-building was fantastic, and it was such an action packed read.
