i think if i hadnt listened to the audiobook i wouldnt have enjoyed this at all. i guess the biggest criticism i have is the 'quirky' humor but honestly that was my favorite part (im a millennial, sue me). theres a part where she imitates an electric guitar and it caught me off guard so hard i couldnt help but laugh. if youre going to read this, choose the audiobook version!! her humor also really helps when talking about such heavy topics. during the pet burial section, i found myself getting weirdly emotional because i love my dog so much. the silly, almost childish jokes kept me from feeling real distress, which i appreciated!

i guess the real elephant in the room is that this book is for kids, which i didnt realize. its not a *childrens book* though. i would recommend this for a very smart and slightly morbid 10 year old. i didnt expect to enjoy a book about death so much but thats why ive been a huge fan of caitlin doughtys youtube channel for so long. shes a very effective educator and communicator though perhaps i shouldve read one of her books for, uh, actual adults lol.
