Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

Overall, a pretty good YA fantasy! I enjoyed the word building and the lore of the world. I want to eventually read the next book in the series only to learn more about the world and the mainland in the story.

Where I think the book fell flat was with all the romantic aspects.
I really hated the "romance" drama with Joseph and Mirabella because it felt awkward and shoved in just for dramatic effect with no real purpose or payoff. The only reason for it being there was for Jules to loose control of the bear at the end but the author could have done something more creative than just "Jules was jealous...."
I also wish there was more focus on Arsinoe than on Jules. Although I do love Jules a lot, I wanted to see more of Arsinoe's struggles with not having naturalist powers (which would have made her reveal at the end MUCH more intense)
