Pre Read: I CAN'T WAIT. On top of my TBR. I plan to start it directly after I finish the Caraval series, and I just ordered from amazon!!! I usually love the villain prequel stuff, so I have high expectations for this.
Update:
Rating: 3.75/5
Spice: 1/5 - No extremely intimate scenes on or off page, but a few kisses, and some flirting.
Was the book as mind - blowing as I expected it to be? No. Was it still good? Yes.
Here's what I loved about the book -
- The beginning and middle were so well written: Catherine just dreams of opening a bakery while her parents have other plans, so she struggles to follow her own dreams, while still pleasing her parents.
- Cath and Jest: Their banter was so sweet, and adorable. Nothing about their romance felt forced at all, and I loved the slow burn.
- Cath's emotions (beginning and middle): I could feel her discomfort during her courtship with the King, and all her frustration and panic.
- Great side characters: They were written so well! Lady Mearle, the Marchioness and Marquess, and the Mad Hatter especially stood out to me.
There are plenty of other reasons why I loved this book, but now why I didn't like it -
- Mary Ann: She was just so bland, and timid. I have no idea why Cath was so attached to her.
- The Setting: In my opinion so much more could have been done with the Wonderland theme, and part of the time I just felt confused by the descriptions.
- Cath's sudden transformation: I feel like she suddenly just snapped. In my opinion it would have been better if there was a little more that built up to that point. She was frustrated earlier in the book, but it just happened in one big leap.
- HER CHOICES AT THE VERY END OF THE BOOK. GIRLLLLL WHAT? This part made me so mad.
But, overall I liked this book! The first half was great, and the third fourth was good. I would recommend it to someone looking for there next read but not if you’re trying to get out of a reading slump.
