The Long Song
by Andrea Levy
A gripping story about a Black woman, called July, growing up in Jamaica in the final years of slavery in the first half of the 19th century. Told by July herself, the novel vividly depicts life as a slave on a sugar plantation and the impact of emancipation, giving a voice to the Black men and women whose histories went unrecorded. It tells July’s story from her birth and childhood through to relationships and motherhood and her servitude under the heartless white plantation owners.
