Music & Silence
by Rose Tremain
This was a wonderful book. I'm amazed that Tremain isn't more widely read, given that her writing approaches Atwood's level of excellence.
Tremain creates wonderful heroes in Peter and Emilia. They have rich, full personalities that she illuminates with whimsical yet relevant detail (Emilia's care of Gerta the hen, Peter's flustered oourtship gestures).
She does an even better job with her villains, Kirsten "the Almost Queen" in particular.
