Republic by Plato

Good lord. Should have called this one "Dystopia". If Plato was alive today he'd have his own podcast and be a regular on Joe Rogan's. Probably be besties with Jordan Peterson.

When people say Plato is one of the pillars of Western civilisation, what they mean is that this is the first man on record who decided his opinion was the only one that mattered because he had convinced himself he was right about everything by arguing with himself in a book. And that, it seems, gave him the authority to establish a hypothetical eugenics breeding program. The amount of ridiculous assumptions and logical fallacies is truly astounding.

This was very tiresome to read, not just emotionally, but stylistically. It's extremely repetitive to hear him reach one outlandish conclusion after another and for the other character in the conversation to go "Certainly" and "True" fifty times in a row without offering any significant input more than once or twice in the entire conversation.

Western civilisation, as described in this book, is what brought colonialism and slavery worldwide, so maybe let's reconsider whether that's a good thing at this stage.
