Rose Madder by Stephen King
2.0

First off, I would call myself what King calls a constant reader having read most of his books but this one passed me by when it came out.

It started very well and I was enjoying the in-depth story of a woman escaping her abusive (it turn out psychotic) husband. That was until about half way through it went off the rails (IMO) when the supernatural element as crowbarred into it. This is a recurring problem I have with Mr King’s later work where he seems to find it necessary to introduce some Dark Tower-esque aspect to what would normally be a very enjoyable straight forward novel. I’m a big fan of his early work and much of his later stuff …..and love a bit of sci-fi and fantasy but this just didn’t seem to work.

I ended up being very put-off in the latter half of the book and it ended-up being a chore to finish which was a shame as I had a major soft spot for the lead character. Shame.

Also, it was too long and the husband character almost seemed too “anti-woke” to be realistic.
