If I was 15 and was starting to explore books and had never heard of Fight Club then I suppose it’s possible that I might’ve thought this book was pretty good.

It started off sort of OK, a few cringy moments but nothing too terrible but then the foreshadowing started not long in and he couldn’t have made what was coming more obvious if he’d written that the main character had a Fight Club poster on his wall and named the antagonist Tyler instead of Frank.

By the time the ‘shocking’ plot twist came half way through, the book was actually making me laugh out loud. Then he has the inspirational idea to do EXACTLY THE SAME TWIST AGAIN in the second half but with a different character! To make it even more laughable the character is just copied wholesale from Morgan Freeman in The Shawshank Redemption and he even NAMES THE CHARACTER ‘RED’! I honestly spent the whole of the second half of the book either laughing or shaking my head in disbelief.

To be absolutely fair I got the idea to read this book from a discussion about bad books so I guess in that respect I got what I was expecting. It did make me laugh quite a bit but I’m fairly certain that wasn’t the authors intention for the most part. It’s hard to believe that at no point during the process that no one stopped to point out how derivative the plot is and how poorly it’s written. Even though I understand that the writer has had mental health problems and I guess it’s trying to be compassionate it also comes over as pretty insulting to people with genuine serious mental health illnesses.

I’ve bumped up the rating from one star only because I think the minimalist cover/spine design is quite striking.
